Food Handling Without Gloves: Restaurant Violations in Old Town Alexandria (ICYMI)
Health inspectors found an employee handling food without gloves and more at Old Town Alexandria restaurants.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The City of Alexandria regularly conducts health inspections for local restaurants. The frequency of inspections on the type of food served and how it is prepared. “In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations,” states the Virginia Department of Health’s website.
Here are some of the violations from recent inspections in May. Among the violations were food stored on the floor, uncovered food and insects in the kitchen and dining areas.

violations: uncovered eggs, certified food manager not present, dirty food containers

violation: handwashing sink slow to drain
Hawwi Ethiopian Cafe and Restaurant: 1125 Queen St, Alexandria, VA 22314, last inspection: May 3
violations: improper handwashing, employee handling bread without gloves, uncovered food in freezer, cabbage and flour stored on floor, soup and chick peas not properly cooled within six hours
Landini Brothers: 115 King St, Alexandria, VA 22314, last inspection: May 5
violations: pasta machine stored in standing water after cleaning, employee hand washing sign not provided at kitchen handwashing sink, light bulbs not covered by protective shielding in dry storage area
Panera Bread: 1940 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, last inspection: May 10
violations: employee drinking from uncovered beverage in kitchen, gnats and fruit flies in dish washing area, ants in dining room area

violations: employee not washing hands before handling food, open drinking container stored near food preparation area, employee without proper hair restraints, cooked onions and marinara measured at improper temperatures, flood drain backing up onto floor when handsink is used, exterior door not tight fitted and may allot pests to enter
