New Toy Store Seeks To Fill Void Left By Why Not Closing In Old Town Alexandria

Motivated by the closure of the Why Not toy store, the owner of Red Barn Mercantile and Penny Post will bring a toy store back to Old Town.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Years after the closure of longtime toy store Why Not, one small business owner thinks it's time to bring a toy store back to Old Town Alexandria.

Amy Rutherford, owner of Red Barn Mercantile and Penny Post, announced last week that she plans to open a children's store focused on toys. The opening at 1310 King Street is aimed for the fall. The store will have items such as toys, arts and crafts, books, science experiments and candy.

"Our kid's section has done so well that we really thought it's time to explode it and offer kids in the neighborhood something really exciting," said Rutherford in an Instagram announcement.

Rutherford was motivated by the closing of the Why Not toy store six years ago after 53 years in business. While Rutherford was planning to open Penny Post at the time, she had considered changing the concept to a toy store.

Even though Penny Post moved forward as planned, Rutherford didn't let go of the idea of someday opening a toy store.

"A toy store is long overdue in Old Town and I’m just thankful that no one else has thought of it yet," Rutherford shared in a blog post on Red Barn Mercantile's website. "Many of us have done what we could to fill the hole Why Not? left, but there is still a need for a store devoted to children’s gifts. And that is exactly what we have planned."

Rutherford is asking for the public's help to choose a name for the business in a survey. The survey includes several potential names — Ickle Me, Dottie's, Pip & Squeak, and Georgie & Dot. Respondents may also suggest other names. Those who take the survey will be entered to win $100 in gift cards. If a respondent suggests another name and the name is ultimately selected, they will receive $500 in gift cards.

The fall opening is subject to construction and permits being completed on time.
