The People's Drug: Kid-Tested, Parents-Approved

Old Town's newest restaurant is a refreshing addition

When you're looking for a quick snack and a refreshing cocktail, but have a toddler in tow, options in Old Town - while plentiful - must be considered strategically.

The People’s Drug, Old Town’s newest addition to the cocktail and light bite family, was a delightful answer to Friday’s very warm, very thirsty evening.

My husband and I sat down at one of the four outdoor tables intending to grab a drink before heading home for dinner, but we ended up staying for a couple rounds plus some snacks.

We started with a round of Palomas and they didn’t disappoint - easily the best one we’ve had in Alexandria –
tart and tasty with just enough kick that it didn’t go down too quickly. It was exactly what you’d look for in the classic tequila cocktail. We also sampled the Knickerbocker – a rum-based concoction with lime juice, grenadine and dry curacao – which was equally refreshing.

Our nearly one-year-old daughter is a big fan of meatballs and avocados. So, when both presented as options
on the menu, we placed an order when she woke up from her brief snooze (the patio in front of People’s Drug is large enough to accommodate a stroller - BONUS!). The avocado mousse (served atop brioche crostini with a piquillo pepper) and the three-meat balls (served in a bowl with creamy pecorino polenta) were equally satisfying. The mousse was very creamy, and while simple, full of flavor. The single piquillo pepper on each
triangle of toast rounded out the dish, adding a crisp acidity that complemented the creaminess of the avocado. The meatballs were juicy and composed of a combination of three meats, as described on the menu. I suspect those three are pork, veal and beef. The polenta stole the show though, so incredibly smooth and cheesy without being overly cheesy at the same time. A wonderful balance.

An added bonus to our almost two-hour stop at the People’s Drug is that the staff was incredibly friendly, and the other patrons were equally pleasant. The location, tucked away just off King Street, means you are central to all the excitement of Old Town but with an heir of solitude you don’t get when directly on King.

All in all, a lovely experience which we intend to replicate in the coming weeks – especially now that we know it passes the toddler test. Highly recommend!
