ALEXANDRIA, VA—Society Fair closed permanently on Monday, July 8, months after it held a fundraiser. It was located at 277 South Washington Street in Alexandria.

Washington City Paper first reported the closure. Co-owner Nadine Brown cited a number of factors, from slow business to the impact of the Metro shutdown.

Society Fair was a food emporium made up of a gourmet food market, bistro, bakery, butchery, demo kitchen and catering service. It was founded over six years ago by Chef Cathal and Meshelle Armstrong's Eat Good Food Group, which also runs PX, Eamonn's A Dublin Chipper, Hummingbird and the now-closed Restaurant Eve. Brown, formerly of Charlie Palmer Steak, and her husband Dan Fisher, formerly of Restaurant Eve, took over ownership over a year ago from Armstrong's Eat Good Food Group.

The owners say the restaurant had been struggling even before it changed hands. In February, the struggling business launched a GoFundMe page to stay afloat. The business remained open after the fundraiser, but the owners ultimately raised just over $7,800 of the $50,000 they hoped to raise.
