Tornado Touched Down in Alexandria Last Week, National Weather Service Says

The E-0 tornado with wind speeds of 55-65 MPH, traveled from the Belle Haven area up toward Old Town Alexandria, NWS says.

The E-0 strength tornado touched down between 12:23-12:26 p.m. with a maximum wind speed of 55 to 65 miles per hour.

The tornado touched down near Belle Haven in eastern Fairfax County and continued north on an approximate 1.5-mile path to the City of Alexandria before dissipating.

The NWS said evidence of the tornado is based on corroborating evidence of damage and images from Dopper radar from the FAA at Washington Reagan National Airport and radar at the Sterling, Va. NWS office.

The tornado is estimated to have touched down at 12:23 p.m. near the intersection of Fort Hunt and Belle Haven roads. The tornado continued north across the Belle Haven Country Club, where more large tree limbs were snapped. The tornado likely lifted across I-495 where it crosses over George Washington Parkway, where large tree branches were downed. Several more large tree branches were snapped in the adjacent neighborhood to the north, before the system weakened after 12:26 p.m., the NWS said.
