According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), the 8th President of the United States, serving from 1837-1841, was the first to be born a citizen of the USA and not as a British subject. Of Dutch descent, Van Buren was also the first U.S. President whose descendants were not mostly from the British Isles.
