Virginia Long-Term Facility Outbreaks Continue Into Summer: Data
The numbers of new outbreaks at long-term care facilities were similar in May, July and August.
VIRGINIA — New coronavirus cases totaled 1,199 Sunday, leading the 7-day average of new cases once to again rise above 1,000. The cumulative case total stands at 126,926, while 2,678 deaths and 9,881 deaths have been reported.
Of the total cases, 121,317 are confirmed through testing and 5,609 are probable. The latter refers t0 cases where individuals are symptomatic and have a known exposure to COVID-19. The total deaths include 2,545 with a positive test and 133 symptomatic individuals with a known exposure.
Outbreaks, defined as two or more laboratory-confirmed cases, account for 18,222 of the state's cases. The type of facility with the most cases and deaths continues to be long-term care facilities with 9,597 cases and 1,386 deaths. Outbreaks at these facilities have continued to be reported in recent months.

Below are the numbers of outbreaks by day and month in long-term facilities. April had the most outbreaks, while numbers were similar for May, July and August. More information on date of outbreaks, cases and deaths by facility is available on the VDH Long-Term Care Task Force webpage.

There have been 1,664,475 PCR tests completed on residents in Virginia, a 12,455 increase from Saturday. The statewide 7-day average of percent positive tests is 7.8 percent as of Sept. 2, a 0.5 percent difference from a week prior on Aug. 26.
Hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients fell by 15 to 1,083 between Saturday and Sunday. According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, the hospitalizations include 119 patients on ventilators and 232 people in the intensive care units.
Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 19 percent, while ICU occupancy is at 70 percent. That's 3 percent higher than Virginia's 67 percent average for ICU occupancy in 2019. One hospital reports difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours.

- Alexandria: 3,500 cases, 302 hospitalizations, 62 deaths; increase of 41 cases
- Arlington County: 3,632 cases, 476 hospitalizations, 143 deaths; increase of 27 cases, four hospitalizations and one death
- Fairfax County: 18,983 cases, 2,086 hospitalizations, 562 deaths; increase of 243 cases and seven hospitalizations
- Fairfax City: 125 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of one case
- Falls Church: 66 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
- Loudoun County: 6,198 cases, 394 hospitalizations, 118 deaths; increase of 52 cases
- Manassas: 1,833 cases, 128 hospitalizations, 24 deaths; increase of seven cases
- Manassas Park: 580 cases, 53 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of eight cases
- Prince William County: 11,217 cases, 870 hospitalizations, 188 deaths; increase of 132 cases and five hospitalizations
- Fredericksburg: 495 cases, 48 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of seven cases and one hospitalization, one death removed
- Spotsylvania County: 1,885 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 39 deaths; increase of 22 cases
- Stafford County: 1,769 cases, 144 hospitalizations, 13 deaths; increase of 17 cases, four hospitalizations and one death
