ALEXANDRIA, VA — In one of the more unique Christmas traditions, Santa and other Christmas characters will get decked out in wetsuits and water skis for the 36th annual Waterskiing Santa on the Alexandria waterfront.

The 2021 show will happen Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. with Santa, reindeer, elves and other characters. But come early for the pre-show at 12:45 p.m. to see a crowd favorite — the Grinch who tries to steal Christmas.

The show started decades ago as a result of a bet between friends. In 1986, a group of friends drew straws to determine who would go waterskiing in the freezing water. The one who lost the bet had to go out waterskiing in a Santa suit on Christmas Eve. But rather than end the tradition there, the waterskiing Santa decided to do it again next year.

Today, "Papa Noel" and other volunteers keep the show running to spread holiday cheer to children and families. It takes volunteers to brave the cold and bundle up for waterskiing or jet skiing on the chilly Potomac River. Other volunteers help drive boats, dress characters, and manage radio communications.

Last year's show was prerecorded and not held live with spectators due to COVID-19. This year, spectators are encouraged to mask up and practice social distancing. Santa and Mrs. Claus are planned to have a meet-and-greet in Waterfront Park following the show, but this portion may be removed dependent on COVID-19 conditions.
