What's Open, Closed For Thanksgiving 2020 In Alexandria

Many services are closed on Thanksgiving, and some will remain closed Friday.

Thanksgiving may be different for some who may avoid larger gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19. What hasn't changed is the closure of many services in Alexandria for the holiday.

While Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, some services may continue their closures on Friday. Here are the openings and closings to know on and around Thursday, Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving) and Friday, Nov. 27 (Black Friday).

City of Alexandria government offices: closed on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27.

State offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will close at noon on Nov. 25, and will remain closed Nov. 26 and 27. The Department of Motor Vehicles office (2681 Mill Road) will be closed Nov. 26, 27 and 28.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed from Nov. 25 to 27. For the Thanksgiving break, food distribution sites will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 27, and will reopen the following Monday, Nov. 30.

Animal shelter: On Nov. 26, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will be closed. On Nov. 27, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., by appointment only, for both virtual and in-shelter animal visiting opportunities. DASH Bus: On Nov. 26, the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule. On Nov. 27, DASH will operate on its regular weekday schedule. The free King Street Trolley remains suspended until further notice, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Visit dashbus.com for more information.

Health facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King Street), the Flora Krause Casey Pharmacy (1200 N. Howard Street) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King Street) will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 25, and will remain closed November 26 to 29, reopening on Nov. 30. Health Department COVID-19 case investigations and contact tracing will be operational from Nov. 26 to 29.

Historic Alexandria facilities: On Nov. 26, all City of Alexandria museums will be closed. The Alexandria Archaeology Museum will be open Nov. 27 to 29; the Gadsby's Tavern Museum will be open Nov. 27 to 30); and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open Nov. 28 to 30. All other City museums remain closed to the public until further notice, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound facility: The City’s Impound Facility (5248 Eisenhower Avenue) for towed vehicles will be closed on Nov. 26 and 27.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on Nov. 26 and 27. The Law Library (520 King Street) will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 25, and will remain closed on Nov. 26 and 27.

Post offices: Closed on Nov. 26.

Recreation, nature and art centers: On Nov. 26, all City of Alexandria recreation, nature and art centers will be closed. On Nov. 27, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All other recreation and nature centers will be closed. Metro: On Thursday, Metrorail will run on a Sunday schedule from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Parking at Metro-owned lots and garages is free on the holiday, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day. Metrobus routes will operate on a Sunday schedule. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables. On Nov. 27 to 29, weekend shutdowns of the Van Dorn Street and Franconia-Springfield stations will begin.

Trash and recycling collection: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of Nov. 23, including Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26. On Thanksgiving Day, trash and recycling collection will begin at 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. Collection staff opted to spend Thursday evening and Friday with their families, rather than having all day Thursday off and working on Friday.
