UPDATE: Reston Apartment Fire Started In HVAC Unit: Investigators

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Units extinguished a small fire in a 14th-floor apartment in Reston. No injuries were reported.

UPDATE: (Monday, Jan. 6, 9:10 a.m.): The cause of Friday's apartment fire in the 1800 block of Saint Francis Street in Reston was determined to be an electrical event in an HVAC unit, according to a post on Fairfax County Fire and Rescue's Twitter account.

The Dec. 3 fire was discovered by a contractor working in the vacant apartment. Damages are $1,000 and two residents were taken to an area hospital for check-up.

RESTON, VA -- Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Units responded a few minutes before 1 p.m. to reports of a possible apartment fire in the 1800 block of Saint Francis Street, Reston, according to a post on the department's Twitter account. Light smoke was reported coming from the 14th floor.

A follow-up tweet at 1:59 p.m. reported that the small fire was extinguished and one building resident was taken to an area hospital for a check-up. No other injuries were reported. Crews continued to clear smoke from the 14th floor.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Public Information Officer Bill Delany said that several units from Reston and Herndon fire stations, as well as units from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, responded to the scene.
