Reston Association President Resigns, Cites Cancer

David Bobzien was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and began chemotherapy late last week.

RESTON, VA -- Reston Association President David Bobzien has resigned effective immediately after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, the association said in a statement.

Bobzien began chemotherapy treatment late last week. He had just been selected by the board to be president on April 11 after being elected to a three-year term as the apartment owners' representative last year.

“My hope is to get through this so that I can continue to enjoy the people and pathways that [my wife] Cathy and I fell in love with when we moved to Reston in 1975,” said Bobzien in the statement. “Reston for Life has taken on a new meaning for us.”

The nine-member board will now have two open seats as a result of the resignation. Victoria White vacated her seat on April 11 after moving out of the Hunters Wood/Dogwood District she represented.

White's seat will be filled at the RA's next meeting May 24, and the apartment owners' seat will be replaced by majority vote of the apartment owners.

“David will be missed as both a board member and president. His understanding of the county and its many components was a real benefit to RA,” said the association’s acting CEO, Larry Butler, in the statement. “I am hopeful that his treatment is speedy and effective so that he can get back to all of the things in which he was involved in the Reston community.”
