Smoking In Bed Sparks Reston Townhouse Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units responded to a townhouse fire Wednesday night that inspectors say was caused by smoking in bed.

RESTON, VA -- Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department units responded Wednesday night to a Reston townhouse fire caused by smoking in bed, according to a press release.

FCFRD units were dispatched Jan. 22, around 11:34 a.m., to the report of a townhouse fire in the 2300 block of Antiqua Court in Reston. Arriving on the scene, firefighters reported smoke coming from the front and roof of the home. Crews quickly extinguished the fire located on the second floor.

No firefighter injuries were reported and one occupant was taken to an area hospital to be checked out.

At the time of the fire, two occupants were in the home, when one noticed a fire on a bed in one of the bedrooms. She alerted the other occupant, who was asleep in another room.

Investigators determined the fire started on a bed and classified the fire as accidental, having been caused by someone smoking while in bed.

The two occupants were displaced and accepted Red Cross assistance. Damages are estimated at approximately $18,750.
