Here are the top stories in Roanoke today:

  1. A Bonsack convenience store sustained tens of thousands of dollars in damages following an accidental fire Monday evening, according to Roanoke County fire officials. The Roanoke County Fire and Rescue Department says the blaze — which was reported shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6 from the 3700 block of Challenger Avenue — was caused by the drink cooler and its associated components. There are no reports of injuries but the department estimates $40,000 in damages. (WFXR)
  2. Roanoke police have arrested J'Von Jones, 23, who they believe is responsible for shooting two people on Glengary Avenue NW this past Sunday. Jones faces charges of malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a felon, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the shooting. The two victims received non-life-threatening injuries. (WSLS 10)
  3. The Rescue Mission of Roanoke released a statement in response to Monday night's City Council vote to ban sidewalk camping. (WDBJ 7)
  4. The City of Roanoke is implementing a 5-cent tax on disposable plastic bags provided to customers in grocery stores, convenience stores, and drugstores within the city limits effective Jan. 1, 2022. (WDBJ 7)
