Here are the top three stories today in Roanoke:
- Volunteers are still needed for the upcoming Blue Ridge Marathon! The next two weeks are crunch time as volunteers are needed to help mark the course as well as set up tents and an expo at Elmwood Park before the Apr. 14 - 17 event. "Let's jump back in," said volunteer coordinator Kat Andrew. "Hopefully volunteers feel that way too. We haven't had that many opportunities to jump in and volunteer at local events. This is your chance. Come on out." Learn how to sign up at the link. (WSLS 10)
- The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute in Roanoke has received a $3.5 million grant to study alcoholism recovery. The grant was given by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism for a five-year study. "It's very exciting," said Dr. William Bickel, a Virginia Tech professor and director of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Addiction Recovery Research Center. Researchers want to find a scientific understanding of recovery and why people relapse, as well as to identify ways to prevent people from relapsing. (WDBJ)
- A Roanoke man has been arrested for shooting another man Tuesday night on Orange Avenue. Roanoke Police have charged Christopher A. Withers, 33 with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The investigation is still ongoing as police work to find what led to the incident that left a man with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. (WDBJ)
