- A brush fire near Salem was visible across Roanoke Valley yesterday afternoon into the evening. Roanoke County Fire and Rescue arrived at the 2500 block of Wildwood Road, in the Fort Lewis area at 2:00 p.m. with reports of a brushfire that had spread. Officials warned people to stay away from the area as they worked to put out the fire. As of 5:00 p.m. yesterday evening, the fire was five acres in size and about 10 percent contained; units were expected to be on the scene most of the night, potentially into this morning, getting the blaze under control.
