Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:
- A Roanoke grand jury has indicted a city councilman for larceny, on top of previous indictments for embezzlement. Robert Lee Jeffrey, Jr. was indicted on obtaining money under false pretenses from the Economic Development Authority for the City of Roanoke. These charges are based on evidence uncovered as part of the investigation that led to Jeffrey's earlier indictments for embezzlement. The councilman is accused of taking money from the Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization while working as a property manager. The charges are not connected to his role in the Roanoke City Council, on which he still sits. (WDBJ7)
- A Covington man is facing multiple charges after an incident in September in downtown Roanoke. A grand jury indicted 32-year-old Anthony Texeira for abduction with intent to defile, robbery with serious injury, forcible sodomy, aggravated sexual battery, and attempted rape. Texeira is currently being held without bond in Alleghany County on unrelated charges.(WSLS 10)
- A part of the Roanoke River Greenway is closed for repairs; detour signs will be posted. (WDBJ7)
- The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health District will offer COVID-19 vaccine boosters for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to eligible residents by appointment only. (Press Release Desk)
- Estate of Roanoke native Henrietta Lacks sued a biotech company for selling her cells without her knowledge or consent. (Richmond.com)
