🌱 Downtown Homeless Camps + Dr Pepper Day + Refugee Fundraiser
Welcome to the Roanoke Daily— your source for the lowdown on the most important things happening in town.

Happy Monday, people of Roanoke! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.
First, today's weather:
A t-storm in the afternoon. High: 73 Low: 54.
Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:
- Roanoke residents experiencing homelessness are camping downtown under strategically chosen overpasses and overhangs in higher numbers than before the pandemic. Some nearby homeowners have complained to the city about these so-called homeless camps and improvised dwellings, some of which are outfitted with rugs, furniture, and even potted plants. While officials say homelessness has steadily decreased in the greater Roanoke area, officials said, a larger percentage of that homeless population is declining to stay in shelters like the Roanoke Rescue Mission and other community facilities. (Martinsville Bulletin)
- Thousands of people gathered on Sunday in downtown Roanoke in honor of Dr. Pepper Day, an unofficial local holiday celebrating the city's favorite beverage. Roanoke is among the top cities to drink the most Dr. Pepper per capita, and every Oct. 24, Dr. Pepper Park gives out nearly 2,000 T-shirts and cans of soda for free. The 2021 event reached record-breaking ticket sales this season. (WSLS 10)
- Virginia Tech students organized a fundraiser on Sunday at Fork in the Alley to help Afghan refugees in Roanoke get back on their feet. The restaurant, located on Crystal Spring Ave SW, donated 10 percent of its sales to help support the local refugee population. More than 50 pieces of art were also available for auction, as part of the fundraiser which will continue online until Tuesday. (WSLS 10)
