Here are the top stories in Roanoke today:
- A special screening of the new biographical drama "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" took place on Wednesday night at The Grandin Theatre, as a way to educate local residents about living with HIV and AIDS, as well as the groundbreaking work Tammy Faye Messner (Bakker) did with the LGBTQ+ community. The event was organized by the Roanoke Diversity Center and Roanoke City Council member Joe Cobb, in partnership with the Council of Community Services. The Roanoke Diversity Center is celebrating 16 years of providing a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community in Roanoke, offering testing for HIV and HEP-C as well as counseling services and other resources. - In a case handled by Virginia State Police, the Roanoke Police will not be charged in connection to an officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 22. Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell was quoted saying, "Under the facts, I conclude that criminal charges against the officers involved are not appropriate." The shooting occurred back in May when a suspect was shot by officers in the 900 block of Glen Ridge Road NW early Saturday morning after saying he had a gun and refusing to comply with orders to leave private property. - WSLS 10 has announced they will be hosting their free, socially-distant, drive-thru trick-or-treating event on Oct. 28 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Layman Family Farm. (WSLS 10)
- Virginia's Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Winsome Sears, made a campaign stop in the Roanoke Valley on Tuesday afternoon to visit the construction site of the new Crystal Spring Tower. (WWBT NBC12 News)
- Roanoke Valley health leaders have seen an increase in COVID hospitalizations, with over 1,100 new cases again this week. (WSET)
