Memories of politicians, business owners and heroes will come alive at Roanoke’s Evergreen Burial Park annual walking tour Sunday, Oct. 10, beginning at 2 p.m. This 16th annual guided tour of Roanoke’s oldest cemetery features Sam Winkler portraying the colorful Roanoke Mayor Joel Cutchin, elected at the dawn of the 20th century. Also, at the Robert E. Lee Memorial, recently relocated from downtown Roanoke, Civil War reenactor Doug Camper portrays a common Confederate soldier and tells the story of why he was drawn to follow Gen. Lee. Among the other notables whose lives will be recalled are: The family-friendly tour is open to all and is like a pleasant Sunday stroll through history, highlighted by informative insights about people who left indelible marks on Roanoke and Virginia history. The tour begins at the cemetery offices at 1307 Summit Avenue SW, in the city’s Wasena section. Visit https://evergreenburialpark.com/ for more information. The cemetery began in 1916 in what was then Roanoke County. It was designed by Hare and Hare design firm of Kansas City, Missouri.
