Here are the top stories in Roanoke and nearby communities today:

  1. Hepatitis A cases connected to the Famous Anthony's outbreak have continued to rise in the Roanoke Valley. As of now, there are 35 active cases and currently, more than 20 people have been hospitalized due to the illness. Experts say cases may continue to rise in the next few weeks since the incubation period for Hepatitis A is 50 days and the spread may have started between Aug. 10 through Aug. 26. (WSLS 10)
  2. An unidentified man was wounded in a shooting Monday night outside a business on Hardy Road, according to Vinton Police. The gunfire was reported just before 9:40 p.m. and appeared to occur in a parking lot of a McDonald's. The victim was inside the restaurant when first responders arrived. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and his condition is currently unknown. (Roanoke Times)

  4. April Greenway Hartsook, whose vehicle was hit by a train in Troutville last month, has died. (WDBJ7)
  5. Chicken Salad Chick, the nation's only fast-casual chicken salad restaurant concept, announced it will open its newest location in Roanoke on Oct. 19. (The Central Virginian)
