New Bus Station Breaks Ground + Art & Craft Festival Returns

Here are the top stories in Roanoke today:

  1. Crews have broken ground on a new multi-million dollar transit facility in Roanoke.
    Groundwork started in late September at the site of the new bus station in front of the Virginia Museum of Transportation along Salem Avenue. Despite hesitations from businesses and residents in the area, the project is now moving full speed ahead. The station is expected to be up and running by January. (WSLS 10)
  2. The Craftsmen's Fall Classic Art & Craft Festival is back this weekend at the Berglund Center. The craft show features hundreds of artists and craftsmen from more than 20 states, juried and selected for originality and creative excellence. The festival launched on Friday and will remain open on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free with a donation to Feeding America Southwest Virginia.   3. A new senior living and rehabilitation center has opened on Mecca Street, offering residents a unique home-like living arrangement. Richfield Living held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday for its new Health Center - Roanoke Campus. The center currently has 42 residents living in it. (WDBJ7)
  4. After retired Roanoke deputy Kevin Hicks was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, his former coworkers have stepped in to help raise funds for medical bills and travel expenses. Sheriff Eric Orange said they also began organizing a Jeep charity ride on Sat., October 9, and all proceeds will go to Hicks. Registration for the Roanoke Valley Jeep Ride starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office Jail parking lot. Jeep riding begins at 11:15 a.m. followed by food and vendors. (WSLS 10)
