Here are the top three stories today in Roanoke:

  1. Roanoke County is asking the public for more feedback on its 200 Plan. This plan is focused on moving forward with the "community vision" and officials are hoping to hear from people in all five districts of the county. See the link for the meetings happening this month for more information and find details on the Roanoke County 200 Plan. (WFIR News Talk Radio)
  2. A camping site for the homeless near a CITGO gas station in southeast Roanoke caught fire on Thursday morning. The site was located behind a building in the 400 block of Elm Avenue SE. While it's unclear how the fire started, representatives for the Rescue Mission of Roanoke say this incident highlights the dangers for those who are sleeping outside. Just a few months ago, the Roanoke City Council banned the homeless from sleeping outside on downtown streets. "We just want you to know that you can come to the rescue mission," said the outreach manager for the Rescue Mission of Roanoke, Kevin Berry. "You don't need to sleep outside because we have a bed for you right here." (WFXR)
  3. Officials are discussing why Roanoke's population shifted since the latest census in a new interview. Apparently, people moving out of Roanoke contributed to a slight decline in the city's population between 2020 and 2021, dipping below 100,000. Listen to City Manager Bob Cowell's response to these numbers in the link. (WFIR News Talk Radio)
