Here are the top three stories in Roanoke today:
- The second community meeting to discuss the Route 460 Land Use and Connectivity Study will be on May 18. The meeting will be hosted at Bonsack Elementary School from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Residents will have the opportunity to review the study while providing feedback. January's meeting recommendations will also be discussed. (WDBJ)
- Kristi Martin has been named the Roanoke City Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Martin is a 4th-grade teacher at Westside Elementary school and has served in her position for 13 years. She reports that she enjoys solving the challenges that teaching presents. She appreciates the district's "all hands on deck" approach to teaching. (The Roanoke Star)
- A report issued by the Equitable Policing Coalition, which analyzed six months of data, shows that the Roanoke Police Department was more likely to stop Black drivers. The report detailed how the department was 1.5 times more likely to stop a Black driver than they were to stop another driver. The findings were presented and discussed at a Saturday seminar titled "Can Trust Be Built Between the Police and African American Community?" (Lynchburg News and Advance)
