Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:
- Roanoke City Public Schools is hosting a virtual town hall today at 6:30 p.m. for students and families. District officials are currently seeking questions from the community to address during the meeting. Questions may be emailed in advance to townhall@rcps.info by noon Thursday or typed into the question box live during the Microsoft Teams meeting this evening. (WDBJ7)
- Do you know any local residents who have gone above and beyond for the community of Roanoke this year? City Council is accepting nominations for the 2021 Citizen of the Year through Friday, Nov. 5. This award is given to an individual who has exemplified above-average volunteer or philanthropic dedication to the Community; provided volunteer service for a minimum of three years; or voluntarily performed duties related to their paid employment significantly beyond what is expected of a person holding that paid position. All Roanoke residents are eligible except previous winners and current elected officials. (The Roanoke Star)
- Valley Metro will be waiving fees for all fixed-route service and STAR paratransit service on Election Day (Nov. 2) to ensure as many Roanoke residents as possible can get to the polls. (Press Release Desk)
- Roanoke Gas, which distributes natural gas to approximately 63,000 Virginia households, announced that it has joined Our Nation's Energy Future Coalition ("ONE Future") to voluntarily reduce methane emissions across the natural gas value chain to 1 percent or less by 2025. (Yahoo! News)
- The City of Roanoke will be closing several roads beginning on Oct. 29 for local Halloween events scheduled this weekend, including portions of Market Street, Luck Avenue, and 1st Street. (City of Roanoke)
