Hello, people of Roanoke! It's me again, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your host of the Roanoke Daily.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 64 Low: 44.

Here are the top stories in Roanoke today:

  1. The Virginia Museum of Transportation got into the Halloween spirit with its annual trunk or treat event this weekend. The museum hoped to draw more visitors to downtown Roanoke by offering a $2 discount on museum tickets to attendees of the free community event. Train rides returned to this year's trunk or treat after being canceled last year due to COVID-19. (WSLS 10)
  2. A 1966 Roanoke College alumnus has made an unprecedented generous donation that leaders say will help the school advance as a whole. Fifty-five years after graduating from the college, Shaun McConnon gave his alma mater a $15 million cash donation for the College's new Science Center, the single largest cash gift in the school's 179-year history. McConnon, who has founded several successful security companies, made the gift because "his studies at Roanoke College helped get him to where he is today." (WDBJ7)
  3. The victim of a shooting that reportedly took place in the 500 block of 8th Street NW was found by police in downtown Roanoke on Saturday night. After being located at 4th Street and Campbell Avenue SW, the adult male victim was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for a non-life-threatening injury. (WFIR News Talk Radio)
  4. Val Bernys of Roanoke has won the title of Overall 2021 Tour Champion at the Roanoke Valley Senior Golf Tour, finishing the season with 890 out of 924.5 tournament points. The Tournament's 2021 Top 20 list was also announced over the weekend. (The Roanoke Star)
  5. As a reminder to parents and guardians, there is no school for Roanoke City Public School students today (Monday, Nov. 1) due to Parent/Teacher Conferences, or tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 2) for Election Day. (Roanoke City Public Schools)
