Want to Buy a Car at Tesla Tyson's Corner? Think Again.

Should car buyers get to buy cars directly from the automaker? 

At Tesla Motors in Tyson’s Corner, potential car buyers can look, but they can’t get their hands on a new car. Due to Virginia law, car manufacturers can’t operate their own dealerships, the Washington Post reported earlier this month.

While the company which sells electric cars has petitioned the state to grant an exception, the outcome of that decision is not yet known.

A USA Today editorial published this week argues that the state is rewarding a “powerful industry with a guaranteed right to play the role of middleman between producer and consumer.”

Supporters of auto dealers, meanwhile, stated in their opposing viewpoint that “factory stores did not deliver better customer service or reduce consumer costs.”
