Blog Post: Spring Turns into Summer Overnight

Things are heating up at the Vienna Farmers Market. Cherries are now in season, come early on Saturday.

Say a sad goodbye this week to fresh strawberries, asparagus and rhubarb and start saying hello to English garden peas, sweet and sour CHERRIES, red raspberries, and cherry tomatoes. Spring turns to summer overnight – however, this time of year at the market is one of the most exciting for a market manager and market patrons as it is the time when things are really popping into season.

This is just the beginning of what is to come as in coming weeks we’ll be saying hello once again to old friends named blueberry, blackberry, Mr. Tomato and Mrs. Heirloom tomato. Can you believe it soon we’ll be thinking of corn and in three to four weeks we’ll be thinking of the season’s first peaches? Not to be far behind will be watermelons. Oh I sincerely cannot wait.

All of our vendors deal with all kinds of weather year in and year out. You name the type of storm and they know how to deal with it—snow, rain, hail, sleet. One of our vendors was hit by last year’s hurricane Irene pretty bad and we at the market were very afraid they weren’t going to be able to make it back this year. Yet they have all come back, thankfully because their sustainable vegetables are some of the best around.

Did you know that daily cherries are wonderful as pain killers for those with arthritis! I’ve recently had foot surgery (knock on wood) and according to an old article in Science Daily cherries provide natural antioxidants. Can you believe it? Here is a link to the article: Daily Cherries. The antioxidant benefits from the cherries are also quite beneficial. Everyone needs to eat 20 tart cherries and they are delicious.

I’ll see you in the line early this Saturday; I’ll be the one with the slight limp and a big smile because I am at the Vienna Farmers market getting cherries and other great produce.
