Burglary at Vienna School, Cemetery Mystery, Sexting Neighbor + More

A look at recent crime reported to the Town of Vienna Police Department.

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from May 29, 2015 – June 04, 2015. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website.

Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations. INCIDENTS

Suspicious Event 15-005495 450 Orchard Street, NW Between January 16, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. and June 01, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. A citizen reported she had been presented with a plaque by the Veteran’s Administration to be placed on the headstone of her deceased father. Her father was interned at the Sons and Daughters Cemetery which is maintained by the First Baptist Church of Vienna.

She stated she had not visited the cemetery since 2005 but when she recently visited she discovered the plaque was missing and the headstone appeared to have been replaced with a smaller one.

She contacted the First Baptist Church of Vienna and was informed they had no knowledge of the plaque, and the caretaker from 2005 was no longer employed.

Fraud 15-005527 500 Block Yeonas Drive, SW Between April 13 at 12:00 p.m. and May 28 at 12:00 p.m. A resident was contacted by the Virginia Department of Taxation and informed a fraudulent tax return had been filed using he and his wife’s personal information.

This case is being investigated.

Telephone Case 15-005442 500 Block Moorefield Road, SW Between May 25 at 9:00 a.m. and May 30 at 6:00 p.m. A resident reported her neighbor had been making verbal comments and texting her with messages of a sexual nature. She stated this has been going on for some time, however, in the past she felt he was joking and the comments did not bother her. She states now the remarks have become more frequent and makes her uncomfortable.

She stated she only wished to file a report but did not wish to pursue the case at this time.

Lost Property 15-005458 900 Block Cottage Street, SW May 25 between 10:00 a.m. and 10:51 p.m. A resident reported she lost her wallet sometime around Memorial Day.

Fraud 15-005499 200 Block Old Courthouse Road, NE May 26 between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 a.m. A resident was contacted by a representative of Suntrust Bank who advised him his Debit Card may have been fraudulently used in Springfield, Virginia. The resident confirmed the charge was made without his knowledge.

This case is being investigated.

Vandalism 15-005362 Navy Federal Credit Union 820 Follin Lane, SE May 27 between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. An employee reported his vehicle had been vandalized with what appeared to be a key.

Illegal Dumping 15-005519 Tapawingo Road at Shahraam Court, SE May 27 12:00 p.m. Officer Digan responded to the area after a resident reported someone had discarded old carpeting in the area near the W&OD Trail. The resident stated he first noticed the carpets on May 27.

The Town of Vienna Department of Public Works was contacted and picked up the carpets to be properly discarded.

Grand Larceny 15-005401 Panera Bread 136 Maple Avenue, East May 28 between 12:00 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. A citizen reported she was visiting with some friends for lunch at Panera Bread. She stated during the lunch she placed her purse in various locations to include the back of her chair and on the floor.

After she returned home she discovered her wallet had been taken and was informed by her credit card company that several of her credit cards had already been used.

This case is being investigated.

Suspicious Event 15-005386 The Wolf Trap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West May 28 9:40 p.m.

A guest of the hotel reported a female had been hanging around the hallway by his room and was concerned she may have been involved in some type of illegal activity.

Officer Tremont responded and located the female who informed him she was waiting on a friend to get her possessions out of a vehicle, after which she was going to be traveling back to New York.

The friend arrived to return her belongings and Officer Tremont provided her with a ride to the Vienna Metro to begin her return back to New York.

Destruction of Property 15-005396 The Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane, SW May 29 9:14 a.m.

A school employee reported a student had become upset and punched a window, breaking a pane of glass.

This case is being investigated.

Suspicious Event 15-005402 500 Block Maple Avenue, West May 29 1:54 p.m. A citizen reported a Middle Eastern male had been causing a disturbance by yelling at customers and striking himself in the head. The individual had left the area prior to the arrival of the police officers but was located a short time later.

The individual, known to the police officers, stated he had been in a verbal altercation with customers in the area and was afraid they wanted to start a fight with him.

Officer Reedy provided the individual with a ride back to his residence to ensure his safety.

Burglary 15-005482 Louise Archer Elementary School 324 Nutley Street, NW Between May 29 at 10:30 p.m. and May 31 at 1:01 p.m. A school employee reported that several windows located at the rear of the school and on a temporary trailer had been smashed out.

Sgt. Elias along with PFC Kiley and the school employee searched the school and determined a container with an undisclosed amount of cash had been taken.

This case is being investigated.

Vandalism 15-005502 300 Block East Street, NE Between May 30 at 12:00 a.m. and June 01 at 2:36 p.m. A resident reported she had gone to her mailbox to get her mail and discovered several cracks in the wooden post.

She stated there had been a lot of truck traffic on the street lately and the damage may have been caused accidently by one of the trucks.

Grand Larceny 15-005420 Whole Foods 143 Maple Avenue, East May 30 2:00 a.m.

An employee reported an individual, driving a Budget Rental truck, drove up to the rear loading area of the store and stole a pallet jack and loading ramp.

This case is being investigated.

Open Door 15-005425 900 Block Glyndon Street, SE May 30 11:09 a.m. PFC Kiley responded to a residence after receiving a report of a residential alarm that had been activated. Upon arriving he located an open door at the rear of the residence.

Sgt. Sheeran along with PFC Kiley searched the residence and found nothing appeared to be out of place. Information was left informing the residents of the incident.

Lost Property 15-005441 100 Block Patrick Street, SE May 30 between 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. A resident reported he had lost an undisclosed amount of cash.

Arrest – Drunk in Public 15-005451 8600 Block Park Street, SE May 30 9:12 p.m. PFC Tracy was on patrol when he observed three individuals standing next to the 7-11 drinking what appeared to be beer. After approaching the individuals he determined one of the men, a 40 year old man from Vienna, was extremely intoxicated.

PFC Tracy arrested the individual for Drunk in Public and transported him to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was to be held until he was sober.

Narcotics Violation 15-005471 Lawyers Road at John Marshall Drive, NE May 31 1:38 a.m. MPO Seitz was on patrol when he observed the driver of a vehicle commit a traffic offense. As a result of that offense he conducted a traffic stop. Upon his approach to the vehicle he detected the distinct odor of marijuana.

After speaking with the driver and passenger, both juveniles, he located a measurable amount of marijuana.

The mothers of the juveniles were contacted and responded to the area to take their sons home. This case is being investigated.

Assist Officer 15-005517 The Wolf Trap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West June 01 between 10:00 a.m. and 11:04 p.m. MPO Shaw responded to the Wolf Trap Hotel to assist a Fairfax County Police Officer in locating a female that was reported missing from Fairfax County. The officers located the woman who informed them she had been upset but was not in danger.

Her daughter responded to the hotel to keep her mother company.

Domestic Dispute 15-005496 300 Block Mill Street, NE June 01 10:32 a.m. A citizen reported her husband had shown up in a Taxi Cab to exchange their son as part of a custody agreement. She stated she was concerned because there was no child seat in the cab to safely transport her son home.

The husband informed her that a friend was picking them up and assured her there would be a car seat in the friend’s vehicle.

Bad Check 15-005503 Pro Feed Business 234 Maple Avenue, East June 01 3:29 p.m.

An employee reported that a customer has had a record of passing bad checks when making purchases from the business. The most recent instance occurred on May 02, 2015. The employee made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the customer to arrange for her to pay the debt.

Officer Herrera informed her of the steps necessary to prosecute a bad check case. The employee was unsure if the business would proceed with the case.

Juvenile Case 15-005520 Patrick Street, SE June 02 6:55 a.m. A resident reported her daughter had been disrespectful to her and was refusing to go to school. Officer Digan responded and counseled the daughter on her responsibility to go to school and the need to respect her mother.

The daughter agreed to get ready for school and her mother agreed to drive her there.

Fraud 15-005530 100 Block Maple Avenue, East June 02 12:38 p.m. A citizen reported she had been contacted by her bank and informed someone had attempted to use her credit card in Ohio and Chicago without her knowledge. She stated the card may have been compromised while shopping in Vienna.

This case is being investigated.

Forgery 15-005531 Giant Food Store 359 Maple Avenue, East June 02 12:52 p.m. A citizen reported his daughter had altered and forged a check he had given her. He stated his daughter has since gone to San Francisco, California and he has not been able to contact her.

This case is being investigated.

Medical Case 15-005545 Avery Court, SW June 02 5:32 p.m. Officer Tremont and MPO Smith responded to a residence after receiving a request from a doctor to conduct a welfare check on a patient. She informed them she was concerned the patient may have been planning to hurt herself.

The resident was contacted and informed the officers she had never made any statements about harming herself.

Suspicious Event 15-005555 1000 Block Lynn Street, SW June 03 8:50 a.m. A resident reported he had received a telephone message from an individual claiming that a Treasury Enforcement Action had been placed against him. The resident was informed to contact the caller at a number provided. The resident traced the number on the internet and found it was connected to several IRS Scams.

The resident did not return the call and no money had been paid.

Suspicious Person 15-005572 200 Block Maple Avenue, East June 03 11:28 p.m. PFC Tracy responded to the area after receiving a report of a man walking in the roadway and staggering on the sidewalk. Upon arriving he located the individual and after speaking with him he determined the man was intoxicated. The man informed him he was in the area waiting for a friend to pick him up.

While speaking with the individual his friend arrived and after PFC Tracy determined the driver was sober he released the individual to his friend to be taken home.

Suspicious Event 15-005576 300 Block Old Courthouse Road, NE June 04 7:00 a.m. Officer Reedy responded to the area after receiving a report of two individuals involved in a heated argument. Upon arriving he learned the incident involved an on-going neighbor dispute.

The neighbor who had called the police stated her elderly neighbor had been chasing her down the street and yelling at her.

Officer Reedy informed the neighbor he could not chase his neighbors nor should he be yelling at them.
