Contract Approved To Design New Vienna Police Station

Construction for the Town of Vienna's new police station could begin in 2020.

VIENNA, VA—The Town Council approved a $1.6 million architectural and engineering contract Monday for the new Vienna police station. Dewberry will provide design, mechanical engineering, and site plan services for the new station, which could see construction start in 2020.

The new police station will offer more needed space for law enforcement programs and personnel while bolstering security and emergency management capabilities. The facility will also have programming space that the community can share.

The current station is 11,000 square feet and has been at 215 Center Street South since 1994. A 2013 needs assessment determined the Vienna Police Department needed 30,000 square feet for operations. Police are currently using 15,000 square feet of space across Town facilities for investigation personnel, bike equipment storage, property and evidence storage and archived records.

"Our goal is to bring all aspects of the department under one house,” said Police Chief Jim Morris in a statement.

Dewberry was selected for the contact after the Town received six requests for proposals. Applicants needed to have past experience working with police facilities. Three finalists were interviewed.

The new station itself will cost an estimated $12 million. The Town is financing it through general obligation bonds, which gets funding from Vienna's 3 percent meals tax. Vienna’s Capital Improvement Plan calls for $14 million in bonds for police station construction and other expenses to be issued in 2020. The $1.6 million contract with Dewberry is funded from bonds issued earlier this year.
