District Champs: Vienna Advances to State Legion Baseball Tournament

Winners of 15 of last 16 games, team sets sights on state title and more.

The baseball team from American Legion Vienna Post 180 won the District 17 championship Thursday night, clinching a district title and advancing on to the state tournament.

Vienna defeated Arlington (Post 139) by a final score of 10-1 in the championship game, completing the double-elimination tournament with an undefeated record. The team has won 15 of its last 16 games overall, including regular season action.

Post 180 now advances to the eight-team state tournament. This tournament is also double-elimination format, and the winner advances to the East Regional tournament with a shot at clinching a berth in the American Legion World Series later this summer.

"This has been one of my better teams in terms of camaraderie, communication, how they work together," coach Frank Werman said. "It's been a pretty good ride. They're confident, they work well together, they understand how to play and they compete."

Vienna's district title is the culmination of an impressive 19-5 season, resulting in a regular season district championship. As the team prepares for the state tournament, which begins Monday in Williamsburg, Va., Werman says his team has as good of a shot as anyone to win the state and advance further into the postseason.

"We're in a good position to win (the state tournament)," Werman said. "It's all just a matter of how the ball bounces and if it bounces in our favor."
