Kokayi + Spirit Animal

Kokayi is a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, emcee, producer and educator. Recently having placed 1 song in the Bernie Mac documentary "Bernie Mac: I ain't scared of y'al" and l 5 songs in Kevin Hart's "Laugh At My Pain" feature film, Kokayi continues to exemplify the practice of "operating outside of the box". His latest album, Robots & Dinosaurs still receives critical acclaim, receiving a 93/100 from the tastemakers at Okayplayer, and his video for lead single "RoxTar" won "The Freshmen" contest for MTVU and is currently in rotation on the network all while grabbing several honorable mentions on "Best of 2010" year end lists. "Believe It", a song featured on the album, was licensed for the short film, "A l'arraché" directed by Paul Manate, which screened at the Cannes Film Festival and was broadcast throughout France on the premium channel Canal+. With this album, Kokayi created a narrative that highlights the spaces between the extremes of modern pop, rock & hip hop and subsequently deletes them. Kokayi continues to create and nurture his own sound, develop his own brand and continues to be both a student and a teacher of his diverse forms of expression along with his high level of productivity, quality music and electrifying live performances -Kokayi continues to pay homage to his self-proclaimed mantra of "Less Talk, More Walk".

Recent blog chatter and "recommended if you like" comparisons indicate the following: Spirit Animal sounds like 90's Red Hot Chili Peppers meeting LCD Soundsystem when, suddenly, both are karate chopped in the neck by Faith No More. The band's most recent release, a 7-inch for "I'm Around" out on Mecca Lecca Records, debuted on AOL's Spinner.com, has received radio play on shows ranging from KROQ's "Jonesy's Jukebox" to WBRU's "Exposure" in Providence and WCHZ's "The Radar" in Augusta, and was accompanied by a month-long residency at NYC's Pianos. The video landed on popular blogs like You Aint No Picasso and the soulful burner was used in an HBO "How to Make It In America" promo. In 2010, Spirit Animal released their debut LP, "The Cost of Living," a unique and powerful blend of rock, psychedelia and dance.
