Flash Flood Watch Ahead for Vienna

The National Weather Service says torrential rain is possible.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch, effective from Saturday night to Sunday morning, for much of northern Virginia, including Fairfax County.

The watch lasts from 8 p.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. Sunday for the following areas: Fairfax, Clarke, Madison, Rappahannock, Manassas, Culpeper, Prince William, Fauquier, Loudon and Arlington counties. The District of Columbia and parts of Maryland are also included in the flash flood watch.

A flash flood watch means that conditions are possible that could lead to flash flooding.

Showers and thunderstorms will sweep through the region from west to east late Saturday afternoon and continue through Sunday morning, according to the weather service.

Approximately 1 to 3 inches of rain may fall during the watch period, according to the weather service.

Storms may include torrential downpours that could cause flash flooding, as rain falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour could occur, causing rapid rising of creeks and streams.
