Free Fun In Vienna: Halloween on the Green And Little Library Birthday

Halloween will come early for Vienna as spooky witches and goblins descend upon the Town Green.

VIENNA, VA—You don't need to wait for the end of October for a scary good time in Vienna. The town will host two events with double the fun on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The annual Halloween on the Green runs from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. with "spook-tacular" fun for the family. Kids can dress up in their costumes for a morning of crafts, games, storytelling, moo bounces, petting zoo, treats, prizes and more entertainment. The Vienna Singing Princesses will pay a visit, and kids can paint their own pumpkins while supplies last. It will be held on the Town Green (144 Maple Ave E).

But it's not quite time to pack up and go home afterward. The Vienna Little Library’s Birthday Bash will follow the Halloween event. Hosted by Historic Vienna, it will take place from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on the Freeman Store grounds (131 Church St NE).

The celebration will feature cake, hand-cranked ice cream, musicians, games, and stories in celebration of the Vienna Little Library’s 120th anniversary. Songs and stories will begin as children leave Halloween on the Green at 12:30 p.m. Hickory Grove will begin performing old-fashioned folk tunes beginning at 1 p.m., and a proclamation and historic presentation is set for :30 p.m. Visitors can also see how well they can race while balancing a book on their head, among other games. Plus, there's a number of fun dress-up and photo-ops spots.

It's also a step back in time, as people who used the Little Library in its heyday will provide oral histories, and visitors can take a visit to the train depot open house at Northern Virginia Model Railroaders. At 3:30 p.m., Abram and Susan Lydecker, who built the Freeman Store in 1859, will present the Town of Vienna’s history through 10 historic objects, and a best-decorated bicycle parade will get underway.

So families and history buffs alike: mark your calendars for the two family-friendly in Vienna next weekend. (If you're looking for some more adult fun, you're in luck—Oktoberfest is this Saturday, Oct. 7.)
