Girls from Scouts BSA Troop 987 are hitting the trail to prepare for a summer 2022 trip to Philmont Scout Reservation. Philmont represents the pinnacle of high adventure for Scouts BSA, a 140,000-acre ranch in northern New Mexico that offers supported backcountry trekking. The girls from Troop 987, who are based at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, will be hiking over 80 miles during their 12-day trip, making and breaking camp each day as they traverse the awe-inspiring Southwestern landscape.

That the girls from Troop 987 have decided to tackle this challenge is not surprising. Despite only being in existence for three years, since February of 2019, the girls' Troop has already had four Scouts earn the highest honor in Scouts BSA: the rank of Eagle Scout. Historically, only 4 percent of all Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle, so clearly this Troop is doing something incredible with roughly 80 percent of eligible Scouts having advanced to the highest level.

Scouts BSA offers youth many high adventure opportunities, at both the National and local levels. At the National level, Scouts can trek in New Mexico, paddle the Boundary Waters region of the U.S. and Canada border, and sail or dive the Florida Keys and U.S. Virgin Islands. Numerous regional and local high adventure offerings are available as well. These trips give Scouts unique experiences and build skills and confidence that they will carry with them for life.

In addition to high adventure and outdoors programs, Scouts BSA emphasizes citizenship and community service. Scouting for Food, a nationwide food drive conducted by Scouts, is occurring Nov. 13. If you are in a position to contribute to the food drive, please help the Scouts refill the shelves of local food banks by placing non-perishable food items out by 9 a.m. for collection on Saturday, Nov. 13.
