Janickey Promoted To Police Chief In Vienna

VIENNA, VA — After serving the Town of Vienna for the last 13 years as deputy chief of police, Dan Janickey is its new chief of police, effective Feb. 1.

Janickey brings decades of law enforcement experience, proven leadership, and a strong commitment to officer wellness and community service to the role, town officials said in a news release. He is widely recognized for his focus on the wellbeing of department personnel, and he was the driving force behind the creation of the department’s peer support team and the implementation of regular wellness checkups for all employees.

“I have known Chief Dan Janickey for 38 years and served with him in many capacities,” said retired chief James Morris. “Over the past 13 years, he has served the Vienna community, public officials, and the police department with great leadership and care. He is a respected regional leader, and the Town of Vienna could not have selected a better person to serve as chief of police.”

Janickey began his law enforcement career with the Fairfax County Police Department in 1989. Over the years, he has held several leadership positions, most recently serving as commander of the McLean District Station.

His assignments have included hostage negotiations, special operations, incident support services, peer support, and internal affairs. He has also served as assistant commander of the Franconia District Station and previously worked in the Sully and Mason District Stations.

Janickey holds a master of public administration degree from Liberty University, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Bluefield College and completed the executive leadership certificate program at American University. He also holds multiple professional certifications in leadership, emergency management, crisis intervention, investigations, and related disciplines.

He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy at Quantico, which trains top law enforcement leaders from across the country.
