Madison Warhawks boys' lacrosse start season

The Madison boys' lacrosse team is off to a 3-2 start to the regular season. After dropping the home opener to 2017 6A State Runner-up South County, 9-7, the Warhawks rebounded with a 6-5 overtime victory at Lake Braddock. Junior goalie Johnny Almanza had three critical saves in overtime to preserve the tie before senior Greg Waldron (#27 in first photo) scored the game winning goal with 1:14 remaining in the extra period.

Madison then posted a 2-1 record during the W.T. Woodson High School Spring Break Tournament. Under frigid conditions last Saturday (March 24) at Pat Cunningham Stadium on the campus of Woodson High School, the defending 6A State Champion Woodson Cavaliers downed Madison 7-5. After trailing 5-1 at halftime, Madison rallied back to a 5-5 tie before Woodson scored their final two goals in the fourth period. Seniors Thomas MacCall and Peter Webb had two goals each in the game. On Monday (March 26), the Warhawks bounced back to a .500 record with an outstanding defensive effort holding North Stafford High School to just two goals in an 8-2 victory. The Warhawks had an impressive 47 to 30 ground ball advantage over the Wolverines, led by Kevin Lyons and Brett Hanton picking up five ground balls each. Madison closed out the spring break affair with an 11-5 victory over T.C. Williams on the turf at Robinson High School, improving their record to 3-2. Madison had five players each score two goals in the win. Josh Rhodes and Timmy Palmer each added two assists. Madison opens Concorde Conference play at home against Chantilly High School on April 5.
