UPDATE: Mrs. Green's Natural Market No Longer Coming to Vienna

It appears as though Vienna’s long wait to replace Magruders will continue. The hoped-for Mrs. Green’s Natural Market will not be opening a store in the location, at 180 Maple Ave. W, as was planned, according to a company employee. Magruders closed in early 2013.

The announcement that Mrs. Green’s was coming to Vienna was made in March.

Mrs. Green’s, based in Irvington, N.Y., will be closing its store in Fairfax on Sept. 13, according to a company employee; the store opened in January.

Pat Brown, the CEO of Mrs. Green’s Natural Market, recently released the following statement announcing the closure of their Fairfax store, saying that they will provide up to six weeks of severance to associates in addition to working closely with the entire team to transition them to other opportunities within the company.

“Mrs. Green’s Natural Market believes our stores are a place to call home, where families can find locally-grown, organic and natural products that will help them live a happy, healthy lives. Unfortunately, challenges are forcing us to close our Fairfax home,” Mrs. Green’s CEO Pat Brown said. “We want to thank all of our customers and the entire team in Fairfax who treated us like family. Mrs. Green’s will continue to put our people first, working to transition associates in Virginia to other opportunities within the company and provide customers with both healthy living opportunities and the highest-quality all-natural and organic products.”

Outside of New York, the store also has four locations in Connecticut, one in Chicago, one in New Jersey and two in Canada. In March, the company had announced plans for opening about 20 new stores this year. But the company has seen some setbacks including the resignation of its CEO in May, according to Food World News.

In July, it was reported that Mrs. Green’s was pulling out of a planned new store in the Chicago area. Gannett’s lohud.com reported last month that the company was being sued for not paying bills to an ad agency. Mrs. Green’s was also involved in a labor dispute and recently rehired eight former employees, according to Rivertowns Patch.

Vienna’s current grocery store options include Whole Foods Market, The Fresh Market, Giant and Maple Avenue Market.

A new restaurant, Chop’t, is coming in to the space next door to the vacancy left by Magruders.
