New Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Chosen
Scott Brabrand, who previously served in various roles for Fairfax County Public Schools, was selected as the next superintendent.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- The Fairfax County School Board has chosen Scott Brabrand as superintendent of the public school system. The School Board will vote on his appointment June 8. His four-year term would begin on July 10.
Brabrand is the superintendent of Lynchburg City Schools in Lynchburg, Va. He has previously held a variety of positions at FCPS, from assistant superintendent, to principal of Fairfax High School, to teacher.

“Almost 25 years ago, I fell in love with Fairfax County Public Schools. It is the ultimate honor and privilege to return as a servant-leader for this school system and for the entire Fairfax County community,” said Brabrand in a statement. “FCPS teachers, students, and parents are deeply committed to success and I look forward to harnessing that enthusiasm to continue achieving the high standards set for ourselves."
The appointment comes after a nationwide search for over six months. In September 2016, then-Superintendent Karen Garza announced her resignation to take a non-profit job in Ohio. Steve Lockard has served as interim superintendent following her departure.

In November, the School Board hired Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates to conduct the search process. The search firm held ten community forums in January, and the School Board began interviewing candidates in February. A committee of nineteen staff and community members interviewed semi-finalists and gave feedback to the board for the final selection.
“Dr. Brabrand’s deep knowledge and understanding of FCPS, coupled with his creative leadership abilities, will ensure FCPS’ continued excellence serving our students, our schools, and our community," said School Board Chair Sandy Evans in a statement. "He brings a tangible passion for education and for FCPS."
One of the continuing challenges for the superintendent will be balancing the school system's budget. FCPS makes up more than half of the county's budget, with $2.17 billion allocated for the upcoming fiscal year. But the school system projects a $48.4 million shortfall for fiscal year 2018, based on the adopted state budget and a 2017 third quarter review.
FCPS serves over 188,000 students and is the 10th largest school district in the nation based on enrollment numbers. In recent U.S. News and World Report rankings, six of ten top schools in Virginia were from FCPS.
