New Public Works Director Takes Reigns In Vienna

VIENNA, VA — The Town of Vienna is welcoming a new public works director Monday to oversee services like trash collection, sanitary sewer maintenance and more.

Brad Baer, a 22-year Navy veteran, was chosen as the public works director for the town government. Baer has worked in government and the military, most recently serving as Arlington County's facilities design and construction bureau chief. Before working in Arlington, Baer served in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps, overseeing Navy and Marine Corps installations, and was a public works director as the Navy established a new base in Poland. Baer has a. civil engineering bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and a civil engineering master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a registered professional engineer in Virginia, a project management professional and a certified energy manager.

The town government noted Baer will oversee notable projects underway in Vienna.

"Brad’s experience successfully leading teams in planning, design, construction, and maintenance for government and military facilities and capital improvement projects is what Vienna needs moving forward," said Town Manager Mercury Payton in a statement. "I am confident Brad will lead Vienna’s Public Works Department with ease, ensuring a smooth continuum of projects like the Maple and Nutley Signal Improvements and the Maud Robinson Trust Sidewalk project, while managing future initiatives."

Public works collects trash and recycling, maintains roadways, sidewalks, water distribution piping, sanitary sewer mains, water valves, fire hydrants and manholes in the town's boundaries. Other services are snow removal, leaf collection and street sweeping.
