VIENNA, VA — It's been two months since Vienna's Patrick Henry Library closed for its expansion project, and work continues to open a temporary location.

Patrick Henry Library's temporary location will open at the Cedar Park Shopping Center (262 Cedar Lane Suite C in the former El Sol restaurant space). Fairfax County Public Library initially estimated the temporary location would open in June. The permanent library at 101 Maple Avenue W closed on May 9.

The latest estimate for the temporary library opening was late July. Fairfax County Public Library spokesperson Sara Prohaska said staff were working this week to get the location ready and will soon announce an opening date and ribbon cutting.

"Construction is complete and we have received our occupancy permit from the Town of Vienna last week," Prohaska told Patch. "As with all construction projects, there are usually delays with so many moving parts."

The 2,800-square-foot temporary location at the Cedar Park Shopping Center will serve as a quick service library with a small browsing section, pickup of holds, returns, public Wi-Fi, Chromebooks for on-site use and select programming like story time.

Meanwhile, the library project will introduce a larger, 19,000-square-foot library and 209-space parking garage. The town and county are sharing costs for the parking garage, while the library facility is a county-funded project. The parking garage will feature 125 spaces for library users, and another 84 parking spaces are reserved for commuter parking and public parking through the Town of Vienna. The library construction project was expected to begin construction in the summer, with occupancy aimed for summer 2027.

The future library is being renamed Vienna-Carter Library, honoring the Carter family, a multiracial family with roots in Vienna and Fairfax County. The family's history includes establishing an integrated county library branch in the Town of Vienna in 1962.
