VIENNA, VA — Put on your lederhosen or dirndls, grab a beer stein and head out to one of the local Oktoberfest celebrations. While the official Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany is scheduled to run from Sept. 17 through Oct. 3, there will be numerous Oktoberfest festivities to check out near Vienna.

One of the DC region's premier events is the Vienna Oktoberfest hosted by the Vienna Business Association and Town of Vienna. This year's event will happen on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. along historic Church Street.

The event features beer, wine, multinational food, live entertainment, a car show, business expo, vendor market, artisans and free children's activities. There will be two beer and wine gardens and three entertainment stages. Admission is free. Proceeds go to the Vienna Business Association Foundation, which contributes to many charities in the greater Vienna area.

Attendees can take shuttle buses to Oktoberfest. Buses pick up at James Madison High School (door 11) and Vienna Metro North and drop off at Dominion Road NE and Ayr Hill Avenue NE. Public parking options are also suggested on the town's website.

The event is run with the support of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to sign up for various tasks to run Oktoberfest. Those who volunteer for five or more hours receive a free meal voucher.

Oktoberfest at The Boro: Saturday, Sept. 17, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Visit the Sandlot Tysons biergarten for live Polka music, giveaways, outdoor games bites and drinks and other activities. Crafting stations at the event will allow attendees to make glitter tattoos and pretzel necklaces. There will also be Instagram-worthy photos opps set up around Boro Park. The first 150 guests to arrive will receive a free branded stein.

Oktoberfest Kickoff at Shipgarten: Sept. 17, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Kick off Oktoberfest with a "tapping of the keg" that is arriving from Germany, a stein hoisting contest, sausage eating contest, apple bobbing contest and stein-to-stein contest. Shipgarten will have a selection of over 50 biers from Germany, Belgium, Austria and the U.S., and other breweries will be on site.

4th Annual Village Brauhaus Oktoberfest: Opening on Sept. 16, more dates

Visit this German restaurant and beer garden in Alexandria for an Oktoberfest bier selection and live music. Opening day on Sept. 16 will feature live German music, Jaegermule and JaegerRita specials, and imported German Oktoberfest bier. Music is planned Sept. 15 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 16 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 at 1 p.m., Sept. 29 at 5 p.m., Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 1 at 3 p.m., Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. and Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.

Bronson Bierhall Oktberfest Party: Sept. 24

Join Bronson Bierhall for the ceremonial tapping of a keg from Weihenstephaner, local and German beer tastings and live music. A beer stein hoisting contest will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

2nd Oktoberfest Celebration in Middleburg: Sept. 17, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This event along Madison and Federal Streets in Middleburg features two biergartens, traditional German food, live music, festival games and an art fair. Attendees can buy local beer, wine, cider, and traditional German foods from vendors.

Lovettsville Oktoberfest: Sept. 23-24

This event showcasing the heritage and tradition of the Town of Lovettsville has a biergarten, Kinderfest, Oktoberfest-themed music, contests like a stein hoisting competition, 5K Race and 1K Fun Run, vendors and more entertainment.
