VIENNA, VA — The world can always use a little more kindness. And National Random Acts of Kindness Day, observed Thursday, Feb. 17, is an ideal opportunity to spread the importance of being kind and helping others.

This is especially true during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many people around the world still recovering financially, physically and emotionally.

This year's theme for the day is "Make kindness the norm." Throughout the day, people are encouraged to share acts of kindness — whether simple gestures to brighten someone's day or a larger act of goodwill that might have changed someone's life — that they've witnessed or been a part of on social media along with #MakeKindnessTheNorm.

"I have many nice neighbours. Ladies who brought us cookies, homemade jams, toys for my kids. One lady taught me and my kids crochet. She also shared her Monarch caterpillars with us and let us harvest milkweeds in her yard. In fact, this afternoon, one of mine walked over to our house to offer my kids candies. My neighbours help each other clear snow on the sidewalk. Thanks for asking. I realise we are so lucky to be here in Vienna." - Facebook user Ng Tr

"There are too many to share! We have really lucked out and have the best neighbors ever! For the past two years, our neighbor who is 16, walks with my son (who has special needs) to see all of the Halloween decorations around the neighborhood. It’s his favorite day of the year. The same family also picked up our preordered Thanksgiving dinner for us and dropped it off when we were sick and had to quarantine. So grateful!" -Facebook user Lauren Welle Leonard
