Snow on the First Day of Spring 2016?

There's a chance of some snow Sunday or Monday in DC metro area.

A chance of snow on the first day of spring? Weather forecasters are saying that the DC metro area could feel winter's last gasps -- a few snowflakes -- when spring arrives on Sunday.

Spring officially makes its appearance in the Eastern Time zone Sunday at 12:30 a.m.

The new season will start cold and wet, but it's hard to say whether it will be rain or wet snow.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for a chance of rain Sunday, switching to rain and snow showers after dark. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent with a low temperature near freezing. There's a 30 percent chance for rain and snow showers into Monday.

A Weather Channel map likely speaks to the questionable potential of this storm, the D.C. region sits somewhere between a snowflake and a question mark.

"A track farther offshore … might brush coastal New England with snow, but few others except in parts of the Appalachians," the forecasters note regarding the likely track.

If we see snow, it shouldn't stick across most of the region, but colder areas to the north and west may see a little linger on the ground, according to the Capital Weather Gang's Wednesday forecast.

The weather is also shaking up the peak bloom forecast for D.C.'s cherry blossoms, narrowing the peak to just two days after temperatures start going back up.
