Strong Currents From Floods Prompt Rescues In Vienna

Dangerously strong flooding near Difficult Run Creek left drivers stranded in scary conditions.

VIENNA, VA—Heavy rain brought back flooding to vulnerable areas near streams around Fairfax County early Wednesday. One of the more shocking sights was Difficult Run stream around Vienna.

The creek, which typically flows under portions of roads, flooded over and produced strong currents. According to WJLA's Cheryl Conner Costello, a driver stranded in the floodwaters had to be rescued on Hunter Mill Road. Water coming from the creek also flooded from a road and covered an adjacent field.

Similar rescues happened on Browns Mill Road. Fox5 reports that an elderly man had been rescued by crews through deep water. The latest rescue happened around 9:51 am, when Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews helped two trapped drivers. The fire department says a previous driver removed a protective barrier blocking the road, and a driver followed two cars into the floodwaters.

Angelica Run Horse Farm had been among the impacted locations, according to WJLA. The land next to the horse barns flooded, but all horses were reported to be safe.

According to the National Weather Service, Difficult Run is one of the areas seeing severe high water issues. Police are reporting numerous road closures due to high water and downed trees Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service has extended a flood warning for Fairfax County and Fairfax City through 3 p.m. Officials remind drivers who encounter flooded roadways to "turn around, don't drown."
