VIENNA, VA — Temporary traffic signals are set to begin Wednesday on Hunter Mill Road on the Vienna-Reston border, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The temporary traffic signals and driveway assistance devices will be in place until spring 2023 near the bridge over Colvin Run.

The traffic signals will be located where Hunter Mill Road will be reduced from two lanes to one near the bridge over Colvin Run. For traffic coming from Dulles Toll Road/Route 267, the reduction to one lane will happen before the Lake Fairfax Park maintenance entrance. For traffic coming from Baron Cameron Avenue/Route 606, the lane reduction will happen before the residential access road located just north of the bridge.

Lane reductions controlled by traffic signals were previously implemented closer to the Hunter Mill bridge over Colvin Run. The relocation of lane reductions will allow a second lane of Hunter Mill Road to be built along and over the bridge, according to VDOT.

VDOT will also install three driveway assistance devices, which allow drivers turning onto Hunter Mill Road to see which direction traffic is moving between the temporary traffic signals. The devices will be located at the Lake Fairfax Park maintenance entrance, the residential access road south of the bridge, and the residential access road north of the bridge.

The lane reductions are part of VDOT's Hunter Mill Road over Colvin Run bridge replacement project. VDOT is replacing the one-lane Hunter Mill bridge over Colvin Run, which has a 10-ton weight restriction. This area of Hunter Mill Road sees 7,400 vehicles a day within project limits.

The new bridge will have two lanes separated by a median and add an improved trail crossing south of the bridge and abutments for a new trail bridge over Colvin Run. Fairfax County will construct the trail bridge at a later time. VDOT's project is expected to be completed in spring 2023. The $5.2 million project cost is funded by federal, state and Fairfax County funds.
