Vienna Crime: Pantless Jogger, Infatuated School Bus Driver, Mysterious Magician
The most recent crime incidents in the Town of Vienna, direct from the Vienna Police Department.

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from October 24, 2014 – October 30, 2014. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website.

INCIDENTS
Embezzlement 14-012106 300 Block Maple Avenue, East October 14 12:00 p.m. An employee reported an ex-employee had used a company credit card after he had been fired.

This case is being investigated.
Suspicious Event 14-011970 200 Block Park Terrace Court, SE Between October 14 at 6:55 p.m. and October 25 at 2:27 p.m. A resident reported she had been contacted both in person and by mail from an individual whom she felt may have been stalking her. She stated she is unsure if the incidents are related but requested extra patrols in her area.
Fraud 14-012070 400 Block Council Drive, NE Between October 21 at 12:00 p.m. and October 28 at 12:00 p.m. A resident reported that after posting his resume on CareerBuilder.Com he was contacted by a company that wished to employ his services. The company sent him two checks that he was to deposit into his personal account. After depositing the checks the company contacted him and requested he transfer some of the funds into a business account. After transferring the funds his bank contacted him and informed him the checks were counterfeit.
This case is being investigated.
Suspicious Person 14-011899 Locust Street at Glyndon Street, SE October 24 8:58 a.m. Sgt. Juelharte responded to the area for the report of a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle. After speaking with the individual she learned he was a magician and had a performance in the area. He stated he wanted to smoke a cigarette out of sight of the venue.
After the individual left the area Sgt. Juelharte was informed by residents that the individual had been seen in the area on prior occasions. The residents were informed to contact the police if he returned.
Medical Case 14-011909 1000 Block Avery Court, SW October 24 11:50 a.m. Officer Tremont responded to the area in response to a report of a female that may have been in need of medical assistance. Upon his arrival and interaction with the female she informed him she was fine.
Lost Property 14-012041 100 Block Branch Road, SE October 24 12:00 p.m. A citizen reported she had lost her gold necklace in a parking lot.
Fraud 14-012066 200 Block Old Courthouse Road, SW October 24 12:00 p.m. A resident was verifying his PNC Credit/Debit card account when he discovered a fraudulent charge had been made without his knowledge. The charge originated from California.
Assault 14-011917 200 Block Mill Street, NE October 24 1:45 p.m. A citizen reported he and the driver of a commercial vehicle became involved in a heated argument, concerning who was going to park in the shade. The argument then escalated when the two began pushing each other.
Officer Digan responded and after speaking with all the individuals involved he informed them of the warrant process should they wish to pursue charges.
Suspicious Event 14-011918 600 Block Manor Drive, NE October 24 2:38 p.m. A resident reported a school bus driver had become overly infatuated with her, to the point of leaving her notes on her door step. She stated the attention had begun to make her feel uncomfortable and she will inform him to cease the unwanted advances.
Police Service 14-011919 Vienna Police Station 215 Center Street, South October 24 3:35 p.m.
A citizen responded to the Vienna Police Station to turn in a pellet gun for destruction.
Animal Case – Quarantine 14-012101 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE October 24 8:35 p.m.
An employee reported that she had been bitten by a cat while attempting to perform a medical procedure. The cat which had been severely injured did not survive the injuries.
ACO Barker transported the cat to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter to be tested for Rabies. ACO Barker will follow up pending the results of the test.
Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated 14-011945 Moore Avenue at Cottage Street, SW October 25 12:10 a.m. Officer Slebonick was on patrol when he observed the driver of a vehicle commit a series of traffic violations. As a result of those violations he conducted a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver he detected the signs of possible impairment.
After failing to complete a series of field sobriety tests he arrested Mr. Tyler Blue Simon, 28, of Birch Street, SW in Vienna for Driving While Intoxicated. Mr. Simon was transported to the Vienna Police Station where he was given the opportunity to provide a sample of his breath for analysis. After the analysis he was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
Mr. Simon was held on a $2,000.00 bond.
Arrest – Drunk in Public 14-011952 200 Block Cedar Lane, SE October 25 2:13 p.m. MPO Shaw was on patrol in the area of the Cedar Lane Shopping Center when he observed an individual whose gait was labored and unsteady. MPO Shaw approached the individual and determined he was intoxicated. As a result of his intoxication he arrested Mr. Jaime Oliver St. John, 33, of Cedar Lane, SE in Vienna for Drunk in Public.
Mr. St. John was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was to be held until he was sober.
Animal Case – Quarantine 14-011971 Veterinary Surgical Center 124 Park Street, SE October 25 2:42 p.m.
An employee reported that two dogs were investigating each other’s scent when one became overly aggressive. The owner of one of the dog’s stepped in to separate them and was bitten by Gertie, a Lab mix.
Gertie’s owner responded to the Vienna Police Station where Officer Herrera informed her of the quarantine process. She agreed to quarantine Gertie at home.
ACO Barker will follow up with this case.
Petit Larceny 14-011979 100 Block Cherry Street, SE October 25 9:25 p.m. A citizen reported that while at Caffi Field an individual approached his belongings that were placed by the fence, and picked up his Frisbee at which time the citizen told him to put it down
The citizen returned to his belongings and discovered his wallet had been taken. He along with his friends followed the individual and confronted him concerning the wallet. The individual acted suspicious but did not produce the wallet. He then continued towards Glyndon Park when the citizen and his friends stopped following him.
The individual was described as white male, in his 30’s, with brown hair and a beard. He was wearing a black sweat shirt and jeans. The citizen stated the individual had a boy with him, possibly his son.
Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the individual.
Juvenile Case 14-011987 100 Block Maple Avenue, East October 26 1:26 a.m. MPO Sheeran was on patrol when he observed the driver of a vehicle commit a traffic offense. As a result of that offense he conducted a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver and passengers he determined they were juveniles.
After additional contact with the driver he determined she had given him a false name and date of birth and was not licensed to drive.
MPO Sheeran and PFC Vazquez transported all the juveniles to the Vienna Police Station where they were released to their parents. The driver of the vehicle was issued a summons for Driving without a Driver’s License.
Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated 14-011990 Nutley Street at Tapawingo Road, SW October 26 3:17 a.m. Officer Slebonick was on patrol when he observed the driver of a vehicle commit a traffic offense. As a result of that offense he conducted a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver he detected the signs of possible impairment.
After failing to complete a series of field sobriety tests he arrested Mr. Andrew Peter Richardson, 21, of Ware Street, SW in Vienna for Driving While Intoxicated. Mr. Richardson was transported to the Vienna Police Station where he was given to opportunity to provide a sample of his breath for analysis. After the analysis he was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
Mr. Richardson was held on a $1,000.00 bond.
Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated 14-011992 300 Block Nutley Street, SW October 26 3:52 a.m. MPO Shaw responded to the area in reference to the report of a possible drunk driver. Upon arriving in the area he located a vehicle stopped partially in the roadway and partially on the sidewalk. Upon his interaction with the driver he determined that the vehicle had struck a tree (See Crash Number 14-011992 below) and the driver appeared to be intoxicated.
After refusing to complete any field sobriety tests MPO Shaw arrested Mr. Maarten Jules Byl, 43, of Chimney House Road in Reston, Virginia for Driving While Intoxicated. Mr. Byl was also given the opportunity to provide a sample of his breath for an analysis which he also refused.
Mr. Byl was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated (2nd Offense) and Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test (2nd Offense).
Mr. Byl was held on $1,500.00 bond.
Found Property 14-012071 Vienna Elementary School 128 Center Street, South October 28 12:25 p.m.
An employee turned in a wallet he had found in the Vienna Elementary School parking lot.
The wallet will be held at the Vienna Police Station until the owner can be contacted.
Open Door 14-012078 100 Block Church Street, NE October 28 4:02 p.m. An alarm company reported an alarm had been activated. MPO Shaver responded and located an unlocked door.
The property was searched and nothing appeared to be out of place. The door was secured prior to MPO Shaver leaving.
Suspicious Person 14-012095 Westwood Country Club 800 Maple Avenue, East October 29 4:38 p.m.
Officer Reedy was on patrol in the area when he observed a white male jog past him wearing no pants. Officer Reedy drove alongside the jogger and attempted to gain his attention however he fled through a path next to the Westwood Country Club driving range.
Other police units responded to the area but were unsuccessful in locating the individual.
CRASHES
Nutley Street near Roland Street, SW 14-011925 October 24 7:09 p.m. The drivers of three vehicles were traveling north bound on Nutley Street, SW in the same lane of travel. The drivers of the first two vehicles in line stopped due to heavy traffic.
The driver of the third vehicle in line was following too close and collided with the second vehicle causing that vehicle to be pushed into the first vehicle.
The driver of the third vehicle was issued a summons for Following Too Close.
Park Street at Moor Avenue, SE 14-011927 October 24 7:37 p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling east bound on Moore Street and proceeded through the intersection after stopping at the stop sign at Park Street, SE.
The driver of the second vehicle was traveling north bound on Park Street and failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with the first vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Yield the Right of Way at a Stop Sign.
200 Block Maple Avenue, East 14-011983 October 25 12:13 a.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling east bound on Maple Avenue, East. The driver of the first vehicle slowed to turn into a parking lot. The driver of the second vehicle failed to slow and collided with the first vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.
Nutley Street near Roland Street, SW 14-011992 October 26 3:55 a.m. The driver of a vehicle was traveling north bound on Nutley Street, SW when the driver lost control of the vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a tree in the median. The vehicle then re entered the roadway, left the roadway again and came to a final stop on the sidewalk.
MPO Shaw responded and after speaking with the driver he arrested Mr. Maartin Jules Byl, 43, of Chimney House Road in Reston, Virginia for Driving While Intoxicated (See Incident Number 14-011992 above).
300 Block Tapawingo Road, SE 14-012017 October 26 5:29 p.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle discovered his vehicle had been struck by an unknown vehicle.
300 Block Maple Avenue, East 14-012076 October 28 3:37 p.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling west bound on Maple Avenue, East, in the same lane of travel. The driver of the first vehicle stopped due to heavy traffic. The driver of the second vehicle failed to stop and rear ended the first vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Following Too Close.
Maple Avenue near Park Street, East 14-012077 October 28 4:04 p.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling west bound on Maple Avenue, East, in the same lane of travel. The driver of the first vehicle slowed due to heavy traffic and was rear ended by the second vehicle.
Church Street near Beulah Road, NE 14-012080 October 28 4:51 p.m. The driver of a vehicle was attempting to exit a parking lot and struck a concrete post.
CITIZEN NOTES Note to Citizens: Please remove all valuables from an unattended vehicle and
most importantly, lock the vehicle doors.
