Vienna Police: Please Don't Feed the Foxes

Also: Girl calls police after her brother leaves her home alone, man returns from grocery to find car on fire + snow plow backs into car.

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from December 31, 2014 – January 08, 2015. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website.

INCIDENTS

Fraud 15-000041 Cameo Coins and Collectibles 444 Maple Avenue, East December 20 10:57 a.m. An employee reported he received a telephone call from a representative of The Suntrust Bank informing him that a customer reported a fraudulent charge had been made against his Visa Credit Card after shopping at the business.

This case is being investigated.

Suspicious Event 15-000043 300 Block Center Street, North December 23 12:00 p.m. A resident reported he received a letter from Western Union informing him that funds for a wire transfer had not been paid.

The resident stated he had not made a Western Union Wire Transfer and Western Union was unable to provide any further information on the alleged transaction.

Suspicious Event 15-000082 500 Block Plum Street, SW December 23 12:00 p.m. A resident reported she had been receiving harassing e-mails from individuals claiming she had been improperly managing a charitable organization.

The resident stated she was concerned the situation may escalate and wished for a police report to be filed.

Animal Case 15-000137 600 Block Meadow Lane, SW December 27 12:00 p.m. ACO Barker received a report from a resident informing him of a neighbor who had been feeding wildlife, specifically foxes. The resident stated one of the foxes appeared to have lost its fear of humans.

ACO Barker spoke to the individual who had been feeding the foxes and counselled her on the dangers of feeding wildlife and the consequences should she continue.

ACO Barker will follow up on this case.

Animal Case 14-014146 Navy Federal Credit Union 820 Follin Lane, SE December 31 10:40 a.m. A citizen responded to the Vienna Police Station with a black male Shepherd mix dog he had found in the area of the Navy Federal Credit Union.

MPO Seitz transported the dog to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter where it will be held until the owner can be identified.

Domestic Dispute 14-014149 Ware Street, SW December 31 1:55 p.m. PFC Lyons responded for the report of a father and son involved in an argument that led to chasing each other around the house.

Upon his arrival he spoke with both the father and son who stated the argument was the result of the father’s attempt to take a cell phone away from his son.

PFC Lyons determined the argument had not turned physical and the son agreed to go to his room for a while to calm down.

Telephone Case 15-000120 100 Block Fardale Street, SE Between January 01 at 1:00 a.m. and January 02 at 2:00 a.m. A resident reported he received two threatening telephone calls by an individual whose voice he did not recognize and the caller’s number had been blocked. The resident stated he has not had any problems with anyone personally or at work.

This case is being investigated.

Found Property 15-00012 Church Street, NE January 01 4:15 p.m. A Town of Vienna employee responded to the Vienna Police Station to turn in a telephone that had been found during the cleanup after the First Night Celebration.

Sgt. Farhan identified the owner of the telephone who responded to the station and was reunited with her telephone.

Juvenile Case 15-000015 Yeonas Drive, SE January 01 8:37 p.m. A juvenile resident reported she had become upset after her brother went for a walk and left her home alone and unsupervised.

PFC Kiley contacted the child’s mother who returned home and stated she would speak to her son about the dangers of leaving his sister alone.

Domestic Dispute 15-000049 Pine Street, SE January 02 2:15 p.m. PFC Vazquez responded for the report of a son and his elderly father being involved in a heated argument. Upon his arrival he learned the elderly father had become upset with his son and was attempting to leave the residence. The son was attempting to prevent the father from leaving due to his father’s health and the extremely cold weather.

PFC Vazquez spoke to all the individuals involved who provided the same version of what had occurred.

The son agreed to leave the residence to allow for a cooling off period.

Animal Case – Quarantine 15-000095 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE January 02 8:20 p.m.

ACO Barker received a report that an employee had been bitten on the hand while attempting to perform a medical procedure on a dog.

The dog had been released to its owner who resides in Herndon. Fairfax County Animal Control will follow up with this case.

Grand Larceny 15-000075 200 Block Cedar Lane, SE Between January 02 at 10:00 p.m. and January 03 at 12:00 a.m. A resident reported she left two envelopes containing money lying on the kitchen table. She stated she went out for the evening and when she returned home she discovered the money had been taken.

Officer Digan responded and spoke with all the individuals that had been in the apartment at the time the money went missing and everyone denied taking the money.

This case is being investigated.

Grand Larceny 15-000064 100 Block Melody Lane, SW January 03 between 3:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. A citizen reported he had been spending the evening with some acquaintances. He stated he stepped outside for a short time and when he returned inside he discovered his laptop had been taken.

MPO Shaw responded and spoke with all the individuals who were present who denied taking the laptop.

This case is being investigated.

Found Property 15-000071 100 Block Kingsley Road, SW January 03 10:30 a.m. A resident reported that a Shimano brand Mountain Bike had been abandoned near her front yard.

The bicycle will be held at the Vienna Police Station in an effort to reunite it with its owner.

Animal Case – Quarantine 15-000096 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE January 04 11:45 a.m.

ACO Barker received a report that an employee had been bitten on the hand while attempting to perform a medical procedure on a dog.

The employee was informed of the quarantine process and she informed ACO Barker the dog was current on all vaccinations.

Missing Juvenile 15-000195 Commons Drive, NW Between January 05 at 6:00 a.m. and January 07 at 6:03 p.m. A resident reported his daughter had left the house with what appeared to be all her clothing.

Officer Digan made several attempts to contact the daughter by telephone and speaking with friends and relatives she may have been in contact with. Her father stated he received a text from her stating she would be coming home however she had not yet returned.

This case is being investigated.

Case Update:

Detective Elias received information that the juvenile has since returned home.

Lost Property 15-000154 300 Block Tapawingo Road, SE Between January 05 at 9:00 a.m. and January 06 at 5:22 p.m. A resident reported that a friend, who is currently out of the country, had lost his wallet.

Fraud 15-000107 Freedom Bank 502 Maple Avenue, West January 05 11:30 a.m. Detective Simon had responded to the bank in regard to a separate case when he observed two individual who appeared to be attempting to pass a fraudulent check. Detective Simon spoke with an employee who was unable to determine the validity of the check and returned the check to one of the men who then left the bank. The employee subsequently learned the check was fraudulent.

This case is being investigated.

Vandalism 15-000150 1000 Block Park Street, SE Between January 05 at 10:00 p.m. and January 06 at 8:00 a.m. A resident reported that someone had knocked his mailbox from its post.

Arrest – Drunk in Public 15-000126 300 Block Beulah Road, NE January 05 11:05 p.m. Officer Tracy responded to the area for the report of a female who had been knocking on residents doors and then began rolling in the grass in the front yard of one of the residences. Upon his arrival he located the woman actively rolling on the ground.

After speaking with her he determined she was extremely intoxicated and arrested Ms. Debra Lynn Daniel, 60, of Old Lee Highway in Fairfax, Virginia for Drunk in Public.

Ms. Daniel was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where she was to be held until she was sober.

Trespassing 15-000139 100 Block Saint Bernard Drive, NE January 06 8:41 a.m. Officer Holcombe responded to the area for the report of an elderly man who had telephoned the Vienna Police Department to report an incident involving his neighbor. After speaking with the elderly gentleman she went next door and spoke with the neighbor. The neighbor informed her that the elderly gentleman had been continually going on his property and causing problems. He also stated he had been trespassed from his property on a prior occasion.

Officer Holcombe informed the elderly gentleman of the importance of staying off his neighbor’s property and that he could be arrested should he continue.

Fraud 15-000146 100 Block Kingsley Road, SE January 06 between 9:00 a.m. and 11:02 a.m. A resident reported she received a telephone call from an individual claiming to be employed by “E Tech Pro”. The caller stated her computer had been infected with a virus and he could fix the problem if she provided her credit card number to pay for his services.

While at the bank and attempting to release the funds to the caller she was informed by a bank employee that the call had originated from Korea. The resident became suspicious and did not release the funds.

Vandalism 15-000174 1100 Block Pekay Street, SW Between January 06 at 3:00 p.m. and January 07 at 8:00 a.m. The owner of a residence under construction stated someone had thrown feces at the front of the house.

Telephone Case 15-000188 400 Block West Street, NW January 06 4:00 p.m. A citizen who babysits at a home in Vienna reported she had been receiving harassing and threatening text messages from the father of one of the residents at the home.

Animal Case – Quarantine 15-000207 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE July 07 11:00 a.m.

An employee reported she had been bitten by a cat while attempting to perform a medical procedure. The cat had been released back to its owner who resides in Mclean, Virginia.

ACO Barker informed the employee the Fairfax County Animal Control Department would be following up with this case as the cat resides outside The Town of Vienna.

Found Property 15-000193 Giant Food Store 359 Maple Avenue, East January 07 5:40 p.m. MPO Smith responded to the Giant Food Store in reference to a purse that had been found. He was able to identify the owner of the purse and returned it to her.

Arrest – Drunk in Public 15-000194 Whole Foods 143 Maple Avenue, East January 07 5:49 p.m.

PFC Vazquez responded to the area for the report of an individual yelling at people and driving in an erratic manner in the parking lot. Upon his arrival he located the owner of the vehicle who he determined was intoxicated. As a result of his intoxication PFC Vazquez arrested Mr. John Adam Hornyak, 69, of Baltursrol Court in Oakton, Virginia for Drunk in Public.

Mr. Hornyak was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was to be held until he was sober.

Suspicious Event 15-000196 7-11 537 Maple Avenue, West January 07 8:33 p.m. Officer Herrera responded to the area for the report of a fight in progress. The caller stated three people were actively fighting and one of the individuals was carrying a 2X4 board. Upon his arrival Officer Herrera was unable to locate anyone in the area matching the descriptions given by the caller.

Officer Herrera spoke with an employee who stated that one of the individuals involved had been in the 7-11 on a prior occasion and assaulted him by striking him on the lip, however on this occasion only words were exchanged.

The employee stated the individuals left the area in a white Honda prior to the arrival of the police. The employee was informed to contact the police if the individuals returned.

Domestic Dispute 15-000201 Cottage Street, SW January 07 10:50 p.m. A resident reported that she and her son had been involved in a heated argument that stemmed from his rearranging of the furniture.

Officer Herrera responded and spoke with the son who stated he moves the furniture so that he feels more comfortable. Both the mother and son agreed that no physical altercation had occurred however the mother wanted her son to leave the house. Officer Herrera informed her of the eviction process in order to legally remove him.

The mother and son were informed to not bother each other to allow for a cooling off period.

Assist Fire/EMS 15-000205 Giant Food Store 359 Maple Avenue, East January 08 7:26 a.m.

PFC Vazquez responded to assist Fairfax County Fire personnel with a vehicle fire. Upon his arrival he met with the owner of the vehicle who stated he had used a remote starter to keep his vehicle running while he went into the store to purchase some groceries. He stated when he returned his vehicle was engulfed in flames.

The Fire Department was able to quickly extinguish the flames.

Civil Dispute 15-000217 Wear Hair for You 103 Park Street, NE January 08 11:42 a.m. An employee reported that she and the landlord had been having ongoing disagreements and arguments concerning her displeasure with his upkeep on the building.

PFC Vazquez informed her it was a civil matter and not a matter for the police.

CRASHES

Maple Avenue near Park Street, SE 15-000052 December 24 5:00 p.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle returned to discover his vehicle had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

100 Block Maple Avenue, West 15-000013 January 01 6:56 p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was entering a parking lot. The driver stated as he entered the parking lot the driver of a second vehicle accelerated quickly, in reverse, and struck his vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle attempted to exchange information with the driver of the second vehicle, however after admitting he did not have a driver’s license and being questioned about insurance the driver of the second vehicle fled the scene.

The driver of the first vehicle was unable to obtain the license plate information of the striking vehicle however he did state the driver was a younger Asian male and the vehicle was white.

Maple Avenue at Park Street, NE 15-000024 January 02 6:55 a.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling west bound on Maple Avenue approaching the intersection with Park Street, NE.

The driver of the second vehicle was traveling east bound on Maple Avenue and attempted to make a left turn onto Park Street and turned into the path of the first vehicle causing a collision.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Obey a Traffic Signal.

Malcolm Road near Orchard Street, NW 15-000081 January 04 10:56 a.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling east bound on Malcolm Road, NW.

The driver of the second vehicle was backing out of his driveway onto Malcolm Road and collided with the first vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.

Maple Avenue near Glyndon Street, East 15-000121 January 05 6:51 p.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling west bound on Maple Avenue in the same lane of travel. The driver of the first vehicle stopped due to heavy traffic and was rear ended by the second vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Church Street near Dominion Road, NE 15-000122 January 05 7:21 p.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle returned to discover their vehicle had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

Maple Avenue near Niblick Drive, SE 15-000138 January 06 8:20 a.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling east bound on Maple Avenue in the same lane of travel. The driver of the first vehicle slowed and was rear ended by the second vehicle.

301 Center Street, South 15-000143 Faith Baptist Church January 06 10:34 a.m. The driver of a Town of Vienna snow plow backed into a legally parked vehicle while attempting to clear snow from the parking lot.
