VA DMV To Expand Drivers License, Other Appointments In June
More appointments for drivers licenses and other services that require an in-person visit to a Virginia DMV office will be offered in June.
VIRGINIA — After Gov. Ralph Northam announced Friday he will lift all capacity and social distancing restrictions in Virginia on May 28, Virginia DMV will make more appointments available in June for drivers licenses and other needs.
Starting on June 1, Virginia DMV customer service centers will open more windows, creating 184,000 more appointments across the state. This will supplement over 530,000 appointments Virginians have already made for the next three months.
"Virginians have told us they appreciate the convenience and high quality service the appointment system affords," said Richard Holcomb, commissioner of the Virginia DMV, in a statement. "The governor's announcement today enables us to open more windows so customers can secure appointments sooner, but we are still taking great care to offer service that is safe for everyone."

One in-person service that won't require immediate attention is the REAL ID credential. The Department of Homeland Security has again delayed the deadline for requiring REAL ID-compliant ID on domestic air travel to May 3, 2023. Obtaining a REAL ID will require an in-person visit to the DMV to provide required documents. REAL ID will only be needed for those who typically use their Virginia DMV credentials at airport checkpoints; TSA accepts other credentials such as a U.S. passport at airport checkpoints.
Even as DMV centers reopened for appointments in May 2020, more services have been conducted remotely. During the first full week of May, Virginia DMV completed over 365,000 transactions, and about 73,000 of those were done at customer service centers.
