When it rains it pours: Or how do you like them apples?

Apples abound at the market this weekend and just because the weather may be a bit dreary doesn't mean you shouldn't come on down--instead it means you should! You'll get better service, better deals and most definitely a better parking place.

So all season long at the Vienna Saturday Farmers Market (301 Center Street South –Faith Baptist Church Parking lots open 8 am to noon) the farmers have been saying that they needed rain. Guess what? We’ve got rain, enough said! This weekend we’ll have over 18 types of apples between Kuhns Orchard and Mcleaf’s Orchard and with rain and mist expected you can come on over to the market and try out every single type! Many people stay away from a rain market but I flock to them because you’ll get the best darn service you've ever had in your life at one and the best deals of your life as well!

This weekend alone at Kuhn Orchards you’ll see: Honeycrisp, Ambrosia, Crimson Topaz, Shizuka, Kid-Size Gala, Cortland, Early Fuju (maybe Snowsweet’s too), Jonathan’s (my personal fave), Nittany, Suncisp, and Stayman. Add in some pears, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, and chestnuts along with heirloom pumpkins (I call them fairy pumpkins) and gourds and you've got a perfect fall season of fruits and gourds at one of our favorite vendors Kuhn Orchards.

We were planning a Saturday of fun along with the kickoff of the Ayr Hill bulb sale (a 3 weekend sale) but this rain and misty forecast has put all those plans up in the air! Now we are all in a wait and see mode. We’ll make the calls tomorrow evening.  If we have to call off the kids free pumpkin carving/stenciling event apologies in advance but its not safe for wee ones to carve pumpkins in cold rainy weather as I’m sure you’ll agree. We’ll just plan for a better event next year, maybe earlier in the year!   And the hinted at surprise event? Well that will still occur but perhaps in the spring!

BTW, the bulb sale most likely will go on so please come out and support this wonderful garden club early so that the five town gardens can continue to be maintained! Our market is operated and sponsored by the Optimist Club of Greater Vienna. Thanks all and I’ll see you all here next week or at the market! Farmer SJ

Ps Don’t forget to visit our neighbors and friends the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department – they are hosting an open house from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday! And send them over to us for fresh and delicious food.
