How West End Alexandria Voted In The 35th Senate District Race

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Tuesday's primary election in Virginia determined state legislative and local candidates moving on to the Nov. 5 general election. A key Democratic race involved Virginia's 35th Senate District, which covers a few precincts in West End Alexandria.

On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw fought off his first primary challenge since first running for state Senate in 1979. Saslaw won 48.64 percent of the votes, according to the Virginia Deprtment of Elections. His main challenger Yasmine Taeb won 45.75 percent and Karen Torrent won 5.61 percent.

Overall, Saslaw had 48.64 percent of votes in Alexandria precincts to Taeb's 45.75 percent. However, three Alexandria precincts in the 35th district had more votes for Taeb than Saslaw. With 100 percent of Alexandria precincts reporting vote totals, Taeb received more votes in the John Adams School, William Ramsay School and South Port precincts. Saslaw won more votes in the Hermitage precinct and among absentee voters.

210 - The Hermitage (035)

Richard L. "Dick" Saslaw: 140 votes, 60.09%
Yasmine P. Taeb: 80 votes, 34.33%
Karen Elena Torrent: 13 votes, 5.58%

305 - JOHN ADAMS SCHOOL (035)

Richard L. "Dick" Saslaw: 123 votes, 44.24%
Yasmine P. Taeb: 151 votes, 54.32%
Karen Elena Torrent: 4 votes, 1.44%

306 - WILLIAM RAMSAY SCHOOL (035)

Richard L. "Dick" Saslaw: 97 votes, 37.31%
Yasmine P. Taeb: 148 votes, 56.92%
